A grandmother recounts the fight against an irresponsible children’s agency director and an interfering Indian tribe to save her granddaughter from abuses the bureaucrats said weren’t bad enough.

Abstract:
This is a true story of a little girl who is placed with an emotionally abusive family by an irresponsible children’s agency director and an interfering Indian tribe. The maternal grandmother’s narration follows the battles she and her husband experience as they try to work with child-protection agencies, only to be told the abuse isn’t bad enough. Besides dealing with authorities who wield power beyond expected abilities and acceptable ethics, the couple is confronted with misapplied laws, prevalent mental illness, false accusations of sexual abuse, and unpredictable courtroom proceedings that produce perplexing results.

Should be a text for aspiring social workers! , 11/14/2008
Reviewer: Martha Schram
This is a story that will make you angry at a system that sees rules not people and at officials who mistake authority for wisdom and compassion, then conceal their errors. The author doesn't sugarcoat her feelings, but she does show the labyrinth of social services her grandchild was caught in that created those feelings.
