A desperate struggle to survive becomes an inspirational journey of personal growth and enlightenment.

Abstract:
How hard will you work to achieve a dream? From the Pits to the Palace is the powerful story of Carrie Johnson’s liberation. It is two stories told in parallel. One is Carrie’s personal story…sexually abused as a child, fighting issues of self-esteem, struggling with drug and alcohol abuse, this single mother starts a business with the help of two friends. The other… was it shear bravery, single-minded purpose, or basic survival that makes her continue the business after her friends leave? The journey is inspiring, frustrating and a testament to Carrie’s will and determination.

Unforgettable Story of One Woman's Journey to Self Realization through Entrepreneurship , 04/13/2009
Reviewer: Victoria Waterman
“From the Pits to the Palace” made me laugh, cry, and cheer. The pages that spoke volumes were the stories of praise, love, and admiration from Carrie’s sons. As both a professional in the area of women’s leadership and as a working mom, it is very heartwarming and affirming to fellow working moms who have struggled with the guilt of leaving our children for our jobs. Carrie H. Johnson tells her inspiring story of survival for extraordinary outcomes she never dreamed – becoming a successful entrepreneur, mother, and role model. Thank you for your meaningful contribution to the “Leading Women” you inspire. Victoria Waterman President, Leading Women MASS

Carrie Johnson has written a book that is both inspiring and instructional. Zinging with an uncommon courageousness, honesty and painful self-reflection, sometimes raw , amusing, and always disarming. We ascend with her up each mountain of hard-won victory and plummet with Johnson as she tumbles down into the abyss of each defeat. All along, she is teaching us by the example of her spirited life---never give up! When she is down for the count, she is never out. In the end, it is a wake-up call for those of us everywhere who aren’t supposed to be successful, have been told that we don’t have the right tools, the right body parts, the right skin color, the right circumstances, or the right background. Most importantly, it is a revelation for those of us who have been taught not to believe in our incredible gifts and those who have enabled us to underestimate them.

  A reality I can relate to , 04/14/2009

Carrie Johnson’s honesty and candor is surprising and quite revealing. Her story is rooted in a reality we can all understand and aspire to. No, she didn’t become a great doctor and save the world from a dread disease. She worked hard, fought with her demons, and fed her family. I take her at her word… “Whether you think you can or think you can’t… You’re right!” OK, Henry Ford said it first but Carrie lived it.

A must for women professionals and entrepeneurs , 04/15/2009
Reviewer: Allison R. Lane
I have had the pleasure of working with Carrie Johnson at the Center for Women and Enterprise but this book gave me an entirely new perspective on Carrie and the challenges that she has faced and overcome over the years. Her story is so touching and all women can relate in some way to her story of establishing financial stability and addressing complex family relationships while building a career or profession. Carrie does a fabulous job of telling her whole story. I could not put it down - I read it in one evening without stopping! Thank you Carrie for offering inspiration to others! Allison R. “From the Pits to the Palace” caught me by surprise. I laughed, I cried and I actually felt like I was visualizing her story as it played out, as if watching a movie. It was so well written, I found it very difficult to put down. As a budding entrepreneur myself, it has given me the drive and motivation to push on. Carrie is a true inspiration. With so many lessons and so many resources, this book is worth more than its weight in gold.

  A Winning Example , 06/02/2009
Reviewer: Patricia Plouffe
From beginning to end, the book "From the Pits to the Palace" oozes real life drama of the life of a woman fighting to find herself while also being responsible for the lives of her three sons. Carrie has a knack for sharing the truth of how she leaped into starting a business in order to create an opportunity for success, while knowing that trusting the process and endless hours of hard work was the only way to get there. What makes this book so different and special from another person's story of rags to riches is both the way she tells her story...allowing you to live her life as it unfolds. The joy, the pain, the courage, the friendships, and the raw guts of working the business. Carrie shows how when you have a goal and you know you must succeed, you can.

I really, loved this book, I could not put it down. Finally a book that really talks to me. I could identify with everything that she went through as a single mother and a woman with dreams. After reading this book I am more confident with myself, I say if she can go through what I have gone through made mistakes and still kept on going I can do that too. No more self help books for me, I have found the answer to be more successful to get to where I want to be. Thank you Carrie for your honesty, you are a true woman of dignity and respect.

I applauded Carrie Johnson on this momentous project “From the Pitts to the Palace”. This is one of the most powerful messages I have read in a long time. My hearts was pierced after reading this book because I have become a dear friend and know the journey. The courage and the “straight up no chaser” approach is what people need to hear. I recommend anyone who has a thought of starting a business, should read this book. Overnight success typically takes 10+ years and entrepreneurs and business people need to know that.
