Abstract:
Family drama, long-held secrets, attempted murder, and neighborhood mayhem set the scene for a fascinating tale of THE SOUTH END. Frank Crocker returns to his boyhood home in THE SOUTH END of Shoreville, Maine, to bury his father. His intent is to wrap up family affairs quickly and return to New York. However, recurring nightmares mock him as he becomes increasingly involved in South End affairs. An alcoholic brother; an old flame; and an old friend in trouble trap him in the old neighborhood. This is a real page-turner. Good main plot with several interesting sub-plots, with true-to-life characters set in a real Maine town (with a fictional name). Sylvester captures the essence of the community she grew up in and has studied over the years -- especially the "South End"neighborhood where most of the story takes place. I know, I grew up there and returned after many years. I highly recommend it to lovers of fiction and anyone with connections to Maine. Better than Payton Place.

Sandra Syhlvester obviously knows small town neighborhoods, specifically Small Town Coastal Maine, but generally Small Town USA. Her characters, the neighborhood settings, even the High School Musical show, could have happened anywhere in any recent decade, in any neighborhood, where neighbors knew each other. Her major story line is enriched with sub-plots, and the resulting book is a great read. Even her minor characters, like Gertie, the neighborhood lady whose cheap perfume didn't hide the aroma of whiskey on her breath, are true to life. We only meet Gertie twice in the story, but she is unforgettable. After reading The South End, I found myself missing the characters, wondering what happened in the following years.

This book had a great story line, and I felt I knew all the characters. Its a fine example of small town, USA. I hope there is a sequel, because I just didn't want the book to end! I bought copies for my two sisters and they enjoyed the book as much as I did. This was just a fun read. Cynthia Anderson, R.N. , retired.

Finished reading "The South End" in record time. I enjoyed it very much...turning those pages until I came to the last page and wishing there was more. It is nostalgic, and contains a bit about life back then and some mystery too. I'm telling everyone to read it.

This book is a novel about my hometown in Maine and I loved it--- because of all the familiar places mentioned. The story is a page turner to find out more of "what will happen next"? I hope Sandra continues to write more about Maine!
