Now we call it adventure, but there was little in the way of law enforcement and legal structure in the west during its formation. Men and women sometimes had to resort to unusual means to stand against the greed and meanness of the few people who took advantage of the situation. The mining district around Cumberland Pass in central Colorado flourished from about 1880 until just after the turn of the century. There was enough wealth to push the Denver & South Park railroad to dig the Alpine Tunnel through the continental divide. Let yourself relax and imagine the action.
