A ninth grade hockey player finds an enemy in a place she loves, love in the place she dreads—both challenge her to survive and thrive in her freshman season.

Abstract:
For some girls, high school is not much different than eighth grade, just a bigger building with hot looking guys. But field hockey player, Jackie McKendry, has a big case of nerves and wishes ninth grade could be magically blinked away. For her, life would be better if she could begin her day at three o’clock on the athletic fields of Northfield High. What she discovers is—hearts yearn to take risks, eighth grade rivalries die hard, and change must be faced by everyone, if they are to survive their freshman season.

I really liked this book. "Freshman Season" was an enjoyable read that I would recommend to any middle school girl approaching high school. Having coached and taught this age group for more than seventeen years, I thought the story was true to life and the issues the lead character faced were right on target. It's definitely something my own players would want to talk about.

From page to page I found this novel harder to put down. While reading this book I realized how I had pretty much the same fears about starting high school as Jackie, worrying about making the hockey team and the first days of high school. The story is like living freshman year all over again. It reminded me how much perserverence can help you survive it all and also shows how much fun it can be. If I could give the book ten stars I would.

If you have ever been part of a team, regardless of the sport, you will connect with this book. Older readers will be brought back to their high school and college days in an instant - the friendships, the drive, the competition, and the love of the game. Freshman Season definitely leaves you smiling as you read the experiences of all of the girls.
