Abstract:
On September 14, 1862, there were 14,000 Federal soldiers at Harpers Ferry, Virginia under Colonel Dixon S. Miles. They were surrounded by 23,000 Confederate soldiers under Lieutenant-General Thomas (Stonewall) Jackson in what would be known as the Siege at Harpers Ferry. Sharing in the Federal garrison’s fate were 1,600 cavalrymen. Follow their story, and the events leading up to, their dramatic daring Escape Across the Potomac. The history was taken from diaries of military and civilian participants, personal letters, and newspaper articles. Included are reports from the Official Records of the Rebellion, old newspaper articles and period photographs.
