Before finding success as an American League all-star pitcher for the New York Yankees, Jim Coates faced many difficult challenges in his life. But, with his fiery competitiveness and determination he came through a winner.

Abstract:
For generations becoming a major league all-star pitcher and playing for the New York Yankees have been wishful dreams for millions of hopeful young boys. The number who actually realized either of those dreams is extremely small. Jim Coates is one of the few who accomplished both and reached the pinnacle of Major League Baseball as a World Series Champion. Along the way, he was forced to face many painful hardships, disappointments and criticism, which all served to strengthen him and make him even more determined to come out on top. Always a Yankee is the inspirational story of a man who rose above his humble beginnings and made the most of the talents he was given.

I read the book recently and found it both entertaining and informative. It was well written and suitable for all age readers. I found particularly interesting the chapter on the 1960 World Series, that having been one of my areas of particular interest. Well done by both Jim Coates and Doug Williams

  Williams is 2 for 2! , 01/20/2010

This book is a must read for all baseball fans ... especially those intrigued by baseball history. Williams does an artful job of compiling the heartwarming and sometimes comical story of Jim Coates's rise from schoolboy standout to World Series champion. Additionally, the reader will find many interesting recollections of other famous baseball figures from the 1950's and 1960's. It's a story that can be enjoyed by all, and reflects well on Coates, the Yankees and the Old Dominion.

I was always told that I had a great uncle who pitched for the Yankees. My family is from Kilmarnock and I would love to know if the story is true. Robert e Coates, Thomas E Coates sr

  Williams Scores Again ! , 01/21/2011

I want to congratulate Mr. Williams on another fine piece of baseball lore. His first book "So Many Summer Fields" was a heartfelt masterpiece, so I expected nothing less from this venture. The author is a great storyteller and his down-to-earth demeanor makes this a great read. I have had an opportunity to meet both Mr. Williams and Mr. Coates and I am proud to say that they are fellow Southern gentlemen. If you are a Yankee fan, or just a baseball fan in general, you don't want to miss this book. I look forward to the author's next piece of work.
