Abstract:
Bamboo Byways vividly depicts daily life in Southeast Asia through the stories of ordinary people like Kamala (a kindergarten teacher), Sanun (a rice farmer), Tawan (a charming grandmother), and many others. Based on personal observations and interviews, each chapter reveals scenes of human life, grace, hospitality, and hardships overcome by individuals who face an uncertain future with great optimism and hope. The book offers human inspiration and a greater cross-cultural awareness of the challenges encountered by people living on the other side of the planet.

  Excellent! , 04/22/2010
Reviewer: Deborah Burrus
Reading this book is like traveling to southeast Asia minus the insects and tropical heat. Jennifer's prose is descriptive and easy- to-read. She incorporates historical details into a modern story and captivates the readers' senses. You can almost smell the street vendors' cooking and the cycles' diesel fuel; almost see the architecture and lovely scenery. Her strength is capturing the culture through an individual's story in each chapter. Truly a joy to read. I highly recommend it!
