The East German soldiers told us in their broken English, to get out of the car as they pointed their rifles at us. We were petrified, but we kept our thoughts to ourselves. One wrong move and the soldier, who was still holding the rifle on us, would gun us down without a second thought. Finally, one soldier crawled under the car to see if anyone was hiding under our car. My palms felt sweaty and I was afraid to wipe them off on my dress, thinking one wrong move and we would be executed.

Abstract:
A Snowflake in a Coalmine is the story of an eight-year-old American girl growing up during the Cold War in Frankfurt, Germany. Adjusting to the differences of race and religion and the overwhelming loneliness of being 5000 miles from home are just a few of the problems she confronts as she tries to adapt to her new environment. A patriotic love of country evolves through her unsettling experiences with the East German soldiers while traveling to Berlin. Europe’s riches are discovered through the eyes of a child as she realizes the most important treasures in the world are family, friendships, and home.
