Legion of Strangers is the story of famine Irish soldiers who enlisted in the Army. Subjected by extreme prejudice at the hands of ‘Nativist’ officers and forced to fight he Catholic Mexican army, many desert and go over to the Mexicans. They form a unit of Artillery and fire on their former tent mates. Captured at the last battle of the war they are court-martialed and found guilty. This story was covered up. As recently as the early 1900’s the Judge Advocate denied knowing anything about them. Then the records were ‘found’ and form the basis of this story.
