Abstract:
When the Big Winds Blew is the story of Edie Whitford’s experiences during two hurricanes on the New England coast and of their psychological effect on her. Edie, in the course of the narrative, changes from a proud, arrogant, and egocentric woman with no conscious doubts about herself or her way of life to a woman profoundly unnerved and softened by suffering and beginning awareness of self-doubting, conflicts, and the crucial need for real change in herself and her way of life or she’ll be spending her remaining years alone.
