April's edgy, realistic and sometimes brutal novels often tell the story of a person with overwhelming troubles, but her stories also tell deeper tales of human nature, evil and overcoming tremendous obstacles. April's stories are usually dark, psychological and deal with some very significant problems that the protagonist/ antagonist must deal with. April creates a protagonist/ antagonist that is realistic and flawed. Often dealing with corruption, love, sex, hate, and emotional dysfunction, April's characters do not always find all the answers they are looking for. Likewise, the young people in April's books do not always win and do not necessarily live happily ever after.
