Simon Fox is 1952 vintage, and lived in North Yorkshire until 1969, when travelling beckoned. Most of the 1970s were spent experiencing European cities and backwaters, busking, sketching passers-by and selling cartoons. He managed (just) to move on from jobs with road-crews working for Jimi Hendrix and the Rolling Stones, to more sedate occupations such as teaching modern foreign languages and fine art. He has had many one-man exhibitions of water-colours in the UK, Germany and New Hampshire. Fascination with legend and a natural curiosity led to his search for an answer to the question posed in the introduction.
