If it All Ends Today
“A great tragedy of our times is that a significant cross-section of our culture may be unaware of the eternal peril they place themselves in by ignoring the reality of Hell! Many do not weigh the horrific consequences that may be in store for those who have foolishly and defiantly chosen to live apart from God and resist His Commandments. What if it all ends today, how would God judge those who have fallen away?” “The true reality of what awaits us beyond the grave is unknown to those of us who remain behind. In this place vacated by those we have loved we offer Masses and our prayerful petitions to God. The wishful expectations spoken from the lips of those present at the funeral ceremony, filled with affections of love for the bereaved and motivated by sympathy, unfortunately cannot be substantiated. The reality is that God alone, in the presence the all the Heavenly Hosts, will pronounce judgment at the time of one’s passing. In the Catholic Church this moment of our earthly passing into God’s presence and judgment is referred to as the Particular Judgment. The assumption among those who remain in this place and mourn their loved ones, that everyone goes to Heaven at the time of deaths passing is a case of wishful thinking at best or an over simplification in the minds of those who have been poorly catechized.” “The possibility of one going to Hell is something that cannot be lightly dismissed, but ironically it poses little or no concern to most of the living of our present generation! Why? One explanation could be that its reality has been downplayed by many in both religious and secular circles. In fact there are many in both the Catholic Church and many other Protestant affiliations who currently question the concept of Hell as taught to them in their formative years. Also, within the Jewish community the eternal nature of Hell is quite ambiguously understood and its eminent danger has not been properly emphasized or taught by most in authority. Overall one is lead to surmise that today most folks just don’t believe in Hell in the traditional sense. Therefore, the Devil has won a great victory and has been quite successful in masking that terrible place in which he plots to bring so many to be his victims of torment.” read more
