Doug Sprague, a native Californian, grew up in the San Fernando Valley. He has a BS from UCLA and an MS from George Williams College. He’d been camping his whole life, but Doug’s first YMCA camp experience was as a Cabin Leader in 1949 at the age of 16. He directed his first camp in 1955, entered full-time professional YMCA work in 1957, and served YMCAs in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and on the Monterey Peninsula. He retired from the YMCA in 1981, and from teaching in 1994. Doug and Virginia, married 33 years, have two grown children—Todd, a software engineer, and Robin, a pharmacist.
