Lieutenant Commander Lawrence A. Marsden, SC, USN Commissioned an Ensign in May of 1941, Marsden served at the Motor Torpedo Boat Commissioning Detail, New Orleans until joining the U.S.S. Doyen as Supply Officer. He served aboard her through the end of WWII when he was ordered to the Navy Department as Officer in Charge of Public Relations -- Bureau of Supplies and Accounts. Resigning his commission in December 1946, he practiced law briefly in Washington, D. C. and then went into his own business in High Point, NC where he still remains active. He is married, has four children, 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. synopsis The GEMINI SHIP OF THE U.S. NAVY is the story of the U.S.S. DOYEN (APA-1). During World War II, as the first attack transport, it carried troops into battle at many Pacific island invasions, including Iwo Jima and Tarawa. Following the war, it was loaned to the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in 1957. There it was re-christened the MTS BAY STATE and served as residence and floating classroom for fifteen years for the boisterous Midshipmen It is a lively account of both periods, and illustrates the part that unbounded optimism and humor plays in shaping the American military man.
