Hell at Tannehill is a full-length novel about the Civil Was Iron Producing Center at Tannehill, Alabama. This story is fictional but much of the true historical facts and incidents are woven into the story. The sickness and deaths with the everyday struggles, of the time all make this story personal to Ginger McCain, a young girl during the time and place. The busy operation was essential to the Souths War effort. Ginger heard of her aunts troubles in Huntsville, Alabama, living under the Union Army Control. Even though, she never liked her cousin, Cary; she decided to travel to Huntsville to bring them back to live at Tannehill. Along with her brother Tom, her Yankee friend, Phelan Dembroskey and her hand-maid, Ceelon, the four all traveled there in a covered wagon, to bring them back to the safety of Tannehill.
Upon arriving they learn that Cary has been raped by a Yankee solider. They all leave the next morning and when stopped by a Union Soldier, they pretend they were on their way to a funeral. Traveling was a dangerous thing, due to the scalawags and other predatories along the roads. And the Union soldiers were suddenly everywhere making the journey more precarious.
Back at Tannehill, life goes on and later Cary gives birth to her baby who dies at birth. But Ginger takes the responsibility of the funeral. But in the meantime, she finds comfort with Mrs. Papano, who operates the Iron Man Inn and her son, Benny. And when Benny was wounded in the battle, and came home to rest; it was Ginger, who helped him to regain his mental stability. And when one of their elderly slaves died, she made sure that he had his proper burial. One slave woman, who was hired out from another owner caused trouble to Ginger and when the Yankees came she begged them to burn the Iron Man Inn.
Gingers mother, Lucy McCain died during the time and caused Ginger to become depressed. But when she heard of her aunt in Huntsville; she realized they needed her help and she could no longer wallow in her own self pity. She found the strength to go forward. Mrs. Papano gave Ginger a wedding at the Iron Man Inn, when the hills were in full bloom of dogwoods and sweet-srubs. On March 31, 1965 the Union marched in and destroyed the entire place, leaving only one house. The men had taken the animals to the hills to keep the Yankees from getting them (true history). But looking down at the raging fires--It was Hell at Tannehill.
