The Bible gives no indication of Lucifer being wed either. Since many consider marriage to be sacrosanct, holy even, it’s difficult to envisage the Devil participating in such a ceremony. Besides, who would officiate? Ask him to kiss the bride? No specific mention in the Old Testament of a wife then, however Satan is linked with ‘a spirit whose name is Opal.” But perhaps he’s just keeping in touch with his feminine side, if there is such a thing. And here’s another unexpected twist in this journey…I can’t sidestep the issue of Diabolic gender. Angels and demons are referred to in both Testaments by masculine pronouns. That may be just semantics. But children named after angels appear to be uniquely boys: Michael and Gabriel for example. That may be just fashion. Before his Fall (October 1st 1914, according to Jehovah’s Witnesses), Lucifer was counted amongst the host of angels, a prince in fact; but he misused the gift of free-will, and fell from grace. Genesis implies his power is less than Jehovah’s, and his knowledge limited, however he still had a vigorous capacity to cause disruption in Paradise, persuading an innocent Eve to question the status quo. Whether fallen or not, angels seem to be asexual. Hornèd, not horny. Puzzling then that he does apparently have a son. Some New Testament scholars indulge in a very strict interpretation of Genesis. They contrast Adam’s comment about Cain, his firstborn, “I have gotten a man from the Lord…” ( the ‘Lord’ in question not being Jehovah), with his arcane gloss regarding the paternity of Abel and Seth. In this scenario, only these two are referred to as Adam’s descendants. The notorious rivalry between Eden’s siblings was directly due to Jehovah. He showed great respect for the offerings tendered by Abel, but was utterly dismissive of his brother’s. Some consider Cain’s alleged sinister parentage as the rationale for God’s otherwise inexplicable favouritism. Welsh legend also relates the Devil’s offspring to the myth surrounding King Arthur. Being mightily discouraged by the successful advance of the early Church, Lucifer resolves to regain his influence. He hatches a plan to father a son who will undo all of Christian redemption. He seizes the chance to seduce a poor but pious village girl one night after she forgets to cross herself during evening devotion. This lapse made her vulnerable to his charms, and the child that she delivered in due course was named Merlin. The Devil anonymously gave the boy all the wisdom of the past and present, but God, suspicious of the gift, gave the infant all knowledge of the future. This insight proved to be a major weapon in defeating his father’s diabolic intentions. Merlin spurned the Devil, and undertook a life of prophecy and miracle in service to Arthur, and by extrapolation, to the new faith. These complications are worthy of a TV soap. I need to tackle the ticklish subject of Sex In Hell…I need to travel to Scotland.
