In a Brazilian shanty-town – a father and daughter can’t find a way out of the grinding poverty. Frustrated and confused, he almost falls in with a group of terrorists. Then he woke to the tune of “Pretty Maria” and saw things the way they are.

Abstract:
It’s the story of an illiterate Brazilian, Pedro, and his daughter, Angelica -- how they scramble to stay alive in their shanty-town and mobilize their neighbors into action. ‘Wake Up, Pretty Maria’ is the first line of a song every Brazilian knows. It was composed eighty years ago by a backwoods Robin Hood named Lampião. Pedro’s friends make it their song. They dub themselves the “Pretty Marias” and show how poor people can be extraordinary. This is about Brazil, the poverty, the politics, religions, courage, music, soccer, and there’s a smidgen of sex.

I've never been to Brazil but after reading Wake Up Pretty Maria, I see the Brazilian illegals differently. This book gives a feel for where they're coming from. Written with a straightforward approach. Recommended to anyone who has ever fallen in love with a Brazilian.
