Abstract:
Part memoir, part cultural history of the 1940s and ‘50s, SANDY PATHS takes writer Sandra Carpenter through the angst of growing up in the U.S. postwar period, through early marriage and family, to success in coming to terms with women’s new role of the late Twentieth Century.

This sequence of vignettes on a California Girl coming of age evokes with memorable intensity the exquisite joys, pains, and mysteries of youth. Begun in a working-class Los Angeles ‘40s neighborhood, this warm tale intertwining families of Green, Holt, Carpenter, revolves around America’s Hollywood-dream state of the west.

I loved the locale which was the same one that I grew up in, pre-war Los Angeles. The different stories woven through this book made for a "bedtime story" every night for over two months. I enjoyed parceling out the tales to focus on each one-- the writing was professional and yet down to earth. The feeling that I knew this woman by the end of her history was real and immediate. I'd recommend this book to anyone over age 40, especially with some interest in California life.
