An arranged marriage, hard luck and AIDS combine to create a memoir about two sisters who band together to rebuild a life full of love and hope. Do I have to be dying to find myself? Sometimes it’s the only way.

Abstract:
The older one got away, the younger one didn’t. This is a story of two Greek-American sisters and their journey towards an intimate life and death. Christine was a fifteen-year-old bride in an arranged marriage; there was nothing her older sister Connie could have done to stop the hard times ahead. Once Christine was diagnosed with the HIV virus, the sisters banded together to try and make sense of the nonsensical. How could a working class, non-smoking, non-drinking mother of three contract AIDS? How could an older sister help her younger sister be the first to die?

A moving story on many levels , 01/14/2004
Reviewer: Janice Cornforth
"The Best of Friends" is part memoir, part family odyssey written in a meandering stream-of-consciousness style. It is at times excruciatingly painful, at times humorous; it is always honest. Connie Kiosse's book is a tender story of sisters becoming friends, a tale of an immigrant family, a reminder of the profound tragedy of AIDS, a careful look at life and death. The author has beautifully woven her sister's story and her own and has created a moving, compelling read.
