Abstract:
Fast and Gamin’ is a collection of 14 refreshing short stories, told form the new South. The author takes a refreshingly frank look at the world of young African American men as they grow fearless and resolute in an intricate and often antagonistic environment. In his writing, he holds no punches and his work often reads as if he is speaking directly with the reader. Through his eyes, Torrance Stephens recreates the world of the South through the eyes of his characters and their experiences. He accurately reflects upon prejudices and attitudes experienced by anyone who has managed to survive and grow up in a world that seems to be caustically designed against equality and pragmatism.

Short Tales from the Hood , 04/15/2005
Reviewer: Flavah Reviewers
“Fast And Gamin” is the latest collection of short stories from writer Torrance Stephens ("A Matter of Attention" & "Rockstar, Stud, Gigolo"). In his latest effort, Stephens writes of tales from the hood about relationships, politics, and tales of the future. It begins with "Cat N Mouse" about the adventures of two men named Hollywood and Roscoe who must decide what to do (or not to do) on Independence Day. In the story, there is an thought-provoking discussion on Colin Powell and Panama which states: “So he’ gon’ go down there and bomb a place where some of his distant relatives live, a place where about 70% of the people are of African lineage?” Makes you think huh? The book concludes with the “Clubbing” about a man who prepares to hit the night spot. The club scene is not what you might think. The surprise ending is reminiscent of a scene from the movie Minority Report or the movie The Matrix. What’s interesting about this is that the story predates both of those films, proving that Stephens is writer ahead of his time. The most interesting story is “Madia” which deals a sexy relationship between Polecat and the title character. It oozes raw sexuality. Torrance Stephens, who holds a doctorate in Educational Psychology, is not afraid to put pen to paper and tell it like it is. From the opening “Cat N Mouse,” to the closing “Clubbing,” Stephens is not afraid to keep it real. For that reason, it’s evident that his readers will stay true to the author who stays true to the game.

FAST AND GAMIN' is a diverse collection of stories that range from hangin' with the boyz to scifi futuristic drama (my favorite). All told in a manner that engrosses the reader into every character leaving them wanting more. This is an excellent choice for a reader who desires more than the run-of-the-mill.
