Abstract:
Set in a time span before and during WWII, this engrossing tale, complete with local dialogue of the period, follows the antics of the Georgia ne’er-do-well protagonist, Barney Hatfield. From a ward attendant in a Southern asylum to a life of debauchery in France and Africa, he enlists in the Army using an alias. He is discovered, and flees for a safe haven in the French Foreign Legion, which he uses as a diplomatic shelter against his dogged Southern pursuers. His felonious experiences, both military and civilian, coupled with his blatant attitude against Southern injustice, offer exciting reading.

  good adventure , 02/12/2004
Reviewer: Lyn Hill
This is a fast paced adventure full of intrigue.Non-hero, Barney Hatfieldis a world class manipulator, who wheedleshis way in and out of work and relationships. After leaving the service where he was a cook, he took a job in a local asylum where he manipulated both patients and staff. Caught stealing and guilty of murder, he hurridly left Georgia and rejoined the service using a friend's papers. When he was caught again, he left for France and the foreign legion. The descriptions of places and situations of the ruralsouth in the forties are well done. The colloquialisms and subject mater are treated as only someone who had experienced the environment could describe. This book is a good read.

  An exciting book , 03/29/2004
Reviewer: Joe Durbin
This novel is very hard to stop reading. Barney Hatfield's scheming keeps the reader's interest throughout. His diabolical exploits are not predictable making the reader wonder what's on the next page. The geographical descriptions, languages, customs, and characters are written so vividly that the reader feels as if he is a part of the story. It is an interesting book from cover to cover.
