Halitza is the central force that sets this family memoir into motion. In 1906, Pincas Meirowitz left Romania and immigrated to New York to perform the Jewish law of Halitza.

Abstract:
Halitza is a simple word, one that many have not heard; yet, in this case, it proves to be profound. According to Jewish law, Halitza must take place before a childless widow is allowed to remarry and must be performed in person. If not for this little word and its primitive ceremony, Pincas Meirowitz wouldn’t have uprooted his wife and four young children from their comfortable life in Romania and immigrated to America. If they had remained, all of them would have succumbed to Hitler’s hell. This book reveals the complexity of family, tradition, and survival in twentieth century America.

The author has captured the story of an immigrant family coming to America for a new beginning with the feeling that you are part of this family sharing their trials, tribulations and celebrations. A completely different culture but sparked with wit and enthusiasm.

As a member of the author's family, I thrilled to every word in this engaging memoir. The story has captured the imagination of my children and friends. It is a timeless tale of immigrants and their struggle to adjust to a new world. But most of all,it is a tribute to my grandparents who I remember lovingly. The family takes great pride in the author. This is a great read. Enjoy!

  A Family's Heartwarming Story , 04/04/2005

From the moment I started to read this memoir of my family, written so lovingly by my grandmother's youngest sister, I couldn't put it down. Though I never knew them, my greatgrandparents, who immigrated to America, were very special people. The family warmth they imbued and the maintenance of customs they grew up with, helped me to understand my traditional heritage. My Aunt Millie has given all of us a beautiful gift. Every family should search for their unique story and memorialize it in a book such as this.

This book should be a movie! Millie Schneir is a great storyteller. Her memoir is beautifully written and deeply heartwarming. A page-turner. It not only evokes an era of deep nostalgia, especially for every immigrant family in America (isn't that most of us?!) - but it has universal themes that ring true for everyone.

  A DELIGHTFUL FAMILY STORY , 06/01/2005
Reviewer: Helene Paulyn Murray
It was with a lot of interest that I read Millie Fain Schnier's family story. Through the author's descriptive narrative, I was totally transported to a foreign land, Roumania and the adventures that followed in America. What most impressed me was the powerful strength of family ties that bound the book together. The loyalties of siblings, especially those between Millie and her sisters was quite moving. Such a rich legacy Millie leaves for her family and those who are inspired by stories of courage, optimism and love. BRAVO!
