Find how Postal Landmarks define the lore, traditions and society of Mathews County, Virginia. It grew one community at the time with a general store and post office in each.

Abstract:
Walk With Me is the history of Mathews County and its growth, one community at the time. The book covers available statistics, pictures and humorous tales, told by older residents. The general merchandise store furnished residents with needs that they couldn’t raise on their land or harvest from the Bay. Each community needed a post office that usually sat in one corner of the country store. The author walked two miles to and from school, met the steamboat, worked on the family farm and shopped from local stores and catalogs. It could be the tale of any rural county on the east coast.

The book is very interesting, and I like the quotations. They add inspiration. I don't usually like non fictionm but this is different.

It was great, really great reading. But there are several misspelled words like scope for scoop and planning for planing.

The book is a great service to Mathews county, preserving records that would soon be lost.

I've read the book, and I loved it. I'll just keep it and will go back and read it again from time to time. Thanks for placing the new road names. I'll have to pick up a new map so I can follow where it community is.

The book is more like a story told in an old fashioned way. My husband is amazed at the information.

One of the best books I've read on Mathews! It is nice to see someone detail out the history of Mathews. Maybe a second book explaining the local town names, how each came to be, after all everything centered around our post offices and general stores! Kudos to Catherine Brooks! Many thanks for the time and effort!

  An Enjoyable Read , 06/05/2009

It was such a pleasure to learn the names and the history of so many people and places in Mathews. Although my family roots are there, I left to go to college and never lived there as an adult. The history of the postmasters and post offices was thoroughly researched and interspersed with many family stories. I particularly enjoyed the quotes and the postcard wit at the beginning of each chapter. However, there is a mistatement on page 99 in the book. "In 1939, Mathews High School became home to all high school students in Mathews County." There was, in fact, another major high school in the County that all of the African American students attended.
