Abstract:
The Deserter is the story of Ezra Parker who walks away from the Civil War and goes home to marry Lizzie Mae, his childhood sweetheart. At her insistence, he returns to his unit in order to clear his name, and serves honorably until the war ends in 1865. Upon his return home, their lives center around their farm, their children, their families and friends, and the small town of Rocky Creek in southeastern Kentucky. Their many years together are wonderfully happy, except for the beautiful Isabella Blair who continues to drift in and out of their lives.
