A knock at the rear clinic door, and Dr. Goodman, wearing surgical gloves, kicks it open. A Navajo policeman wearing sunglasses, at 4 in the morning, is standing next to his panel truck, rear door opened.

Abstract:
Chinle, a small town in northeastern Arizona in March 1971 in the center of the vast Navajo Indian Reservation. A town you would drive through and wonder how anyone could possibly live there. A young medical doctor from the East, just out of internship, is working at a remote outpatient clinic. He is on call one night when a young girl is brought in by a Navajo policeman to be pronounced dead. She was found in the town garbage dump, frozen, lifeless and with signs of an attempted abortion. Other patients are waiting to be seen by the doctor, without any help, no nurse nor interpreter.
