About the time I was forced to join the Hitler Youth, there was another 14 year old boy that would also be forced to join. His name was Joseph Ratzinger. Joseph was a typical farm boy from the Bavarian country pretty close to my home near Munich. Joseph was a very staunch Catholic and couldn't tolerate the views of the Nazis. Joseph finally deserted the German Army towards the end of the war and was briefly held as a prisoner of war by the Allies in 1945. Today Joseph Ratzinger is better known as Pope Benedict XVI.

Abstract:
Max, is the story of a young Jewish boy during WW II. It tells of Max's escape from the Warsaw Ghetto, and his subsequent capture by the Germans. Max would be forced to live at a Lebensborn home and join the Hitler Youth. He would fall in love with "Heidi," one of the girls at the home. Most of the Hitler Youth boys would be killed defending Berlin from the Russians and Americans. Max would survive this ordeal and through a strange twist of fate would end up as a war orphan adopted by a farm family in Western Kansas. It is also the story of Max's sister Sonja.

WW II History Buff , 07/31/2009
Reviewer: Wynn L. Coon
A couple fo weeks ago, Gordon's retired veterinarian, Doctor Dave Browder, gave me a copy of his new "historical fiction" novel titled MAX. This is Doctor Dave's first novel and I didn't get a chance to read it until this past weekend. I started reading Saturday afternoon and could not put it down until I finished it later that night. It is an exceptional book about a boy named Max, growing up in Hitler's Germany. It has a superb story line, that eventually winds it's way all the way back to the wheat fields of Kansas. It is a GREAT read! On the back page of his novel, Doc says that he likes books that are entertaining, interesting, educational, and has an easy to follow story. He also states that "Hopefully, MAX is that sort of book." I'm here to tell you that it is that sort of, and much more. I'm a WW II history buff and the history in this book really "tickled my fancy." Thanks Doc! I can't wait to read your next book! Sincerely Wynn L. Coon CAPT. USN (retired)
