In the 1940’s, A British Naval officer in Palestine releases a terrorist on discovering him to be the brother of the woman he loves, hoping, in vain, she will accordingly accept him.

Abstract:
At the end of World War II Norton, a British naval officer, makes love to Rachel, a Jewess in England. He is sent to Palestine with the Mandate, but seeing the misery of the refugees and remembering Rachel’s fervent support of the Zionist cause, his commitment to the British immigration policy is weakened. A Jewish terrorist, Dan. assisted in the bombing of the King David Hotel. Norton takes him prisoner but, discovering him to be Rachel’s brother, he releases him, thus ruining his career. On return to England he expects Rachel to accept him: he did it for her. She does not. But what he has lost, he has gained in self-knowledge.
