This is the story of Philly’s Finest, of the thousands of men and women, horses and dogs, who pinned on a badge and policed a big city in twentieth century America.

Abstract:
Philly’s Finest is the story of how a big city police force transformed itself from provincial nineteenth century origins into the highly mechanized organization it became in the late twentieth century. This modernization evolved despite numerous obstacles that often threatened its image and damaged its reputation. There was persistent political interference and outbreaks of ruinous scandal and the hard realities of budgets that never seemed to have enough money for more cops or more equipment. All this happened during times of great social upheaval, the birth of the automobile and ever-present increases in crime. This is a glimpse into the world of the Philadelphia Police Department and how its dedicated officers policed the city in the twentieth century.

  Philly's Finest a hit with the PPD , 08/23/2010
Reviewer: Michael P. Cooney
As a thirty-three year veteran of the Philly PD and someone who lived through five decades of policing in Philadelphia, I highly recommend Philly's Finest. Living and working through the Rizzo years as an intelligence operative and then as Special Assistant to Commissioner Timoney, I can easily say that Mr. Weinstein has indeed caught the essence of those times. Knowing or having worked with many of the brave officers used as sources of information by Mr. Weinstein made Philly's Finest much more creditable than other similar PPD chronicles. It's a great read and a first-rate source book. I give Philly's Finest five stars. Inspector Micheal P. Cooney (Ret PPD and fellow author)
