Abstract:
Through the lives of a young married couple this volume portrays life in a rural Irish community during the Great Depression and World War II. Despite their poverty people there lived fulfilling lives, sharing the little they had. They believed strongly that wealth was more a hindrance than a help in getting to heaven---ultimately the only thing that mattered to them. In an idyllic setting of rolling hills and thatched cottages they built a life together, though sharing their farm home with a strong-willed mother-in-law often made their lives difficult.
