Abstract:
As a young couple we made three decisions without realizing the implications:
Getting married as undergraduates, not knowing how we could support ourselves then or later in graduate school.
Starting a family in such an uncertain financial state.
Living and working in England for a year without thought for what we would do after the year ended.
Along the way we lived in Pittsburgh’s public housing, in a Quonset hut at the Nuclear Research Center in Saxonburg, Pennsylvania, where I was doing Ph. D. research and in Richmond, Indiana, where I was on the Earlham College faculty.
