Abstract:
A recent Spotify survey of 20 billion users found Hip-Hop to be the music most listened to, indicating a broad diversity among consumers. This diversity has historically been enjoyed by Pops, Rock and Roll, Jazz, Swing, Soul, Blues, and Gospel. The author believes that since the Spiritual is the progenitor of all these forms, it too should be performed by all ethnicities. This short book provides the background and musical analysis of each of the Hall Johnson Concert Spirituals and will enable singers of all races to understand and perform them authentically and convincingly.
