Abstract:
n 1876, two months after the Custer Battle, the U.S. Army discovered the body of an enlisted man on the lower Rosebud River in Montana. He was found on the “Custer Trail” going up the Rosebud. He had been shot in the head, otherwise, his body was unmolested. He was identified as Private Nathen Short, of Company C; one of Custer’s companies. Officers and reporters wrote of the discovery. They thought he was a survivor of the Custer Fight six weeks earlier. He was known to be with his company that was decimated in this epic Indian Wars battle.
